Zygaenoidea is a superfamily of lepidopterans containing many venomous species, including the Limacodidae (nettle caterpillars) and Megalopygidae (asp caterpillars). Venom proteomes have been recently documented for several species from each of these families, but further data are required to understand the evolution of venom in Zygaenoidea. In this study, we examined the ‘electric’ caterpillar from North-Eastern Australia, a limacodid caterpillar densely covered in venomous spines. We used DNA barcoding to identify this caterpillar as the larva of the moth Comana monomorpha (Turner, 1904). We report the clinical symptoms of C. monomorpha envenomation, which include acute pain, and erythema and oedema lasting for more than a week. Combining transcriptomics of venom spines with proteomics of venom harvested from the spine tips revealed a venom markedly different in composition from previously examined limacodid venoms that are rich in peptides. In contrast, the venom of C. monomorpha is rich in aerolysin-like proteins similar to those found in venoms of asp caterpillars (Megalopygidae). Consistent with this composition, the venom potently permeabilises sensory neurons and human neuroblastoma cells. This study highlights the diversity of venom composition in Limacodidae.

Electrified solid–liquid interfaces (ESLIs) play a key role in various electrochemical processes relevant to energy1–5, biology6 and geochemistry7. The electron and mass transport at the electrified interfaces may result in structural modifications that markedly influence the reaction pathways. For example, electrocatalyst surface restructuring during reactions can substantially affect the catalysis mechanisms and reaction products1–3. Despite its importance, direct probing the atomic dynamics of solid–liquid interfaces under electric biasing is challenging owing to the nature of being buried in liquid electrolytes and the limited spatial resolution of current techniques for in situ imaging through liquids. Here, with our development of advanced polymer electrochemical liquid cells for transmission electron microscopy (TEM), we are able to directly monitor the atomic dynamics of ESLIs during copper (Cu)-catalysed CO2 electroreduction reactions (CO2ERs). Our observation reveals a fluctuating liquid-like amorphous interphase. It undergoes reversible crystalline–amorphous structural transformations and flows along the electrified Cu surface, thus mediating the crystalline Cu surface restructuring and mass loss through the interphase layer. The combination of real-time observation and theoretical calculations unveils an amorphization-mediated restructuring mechanism resulting from charge-activated surface reactions with the electrolyte. This article presents a LiDAR system that utilizes a Fizeau interferometer and photomultiplier tube array to detect the water Rayleigh–Brillouin spectrum, utilized to obtain underwater temperature and salinity synchronizing measurements based on the Brillouin spectral linewidth and shift. Temperature and salinity measurements were conducted in the laboratory to verify the efficiency of the system. The results demonstrate that the LiDAR system can accurately obtain the Rayleigh–Brillouin spectral backscattering profiles of water. Following linear fitting and reconstruction, the retrieved temperature accuracy is ±0.13 °C and salinity accuracy is ±0.16‰. By effectively leveraging the multiparameter information contained in the Rayleigh–Brillouin spectrum, the system achieved precise temperature and salinity measurements.
