Hello. I really was impressed and deeply touched with the anime Kurau Phantom Memory that I enjoyed rewatching over and over again because it resonated with my personal life experiences. Believe it or not, I have seen in my early childhood, somewhere around 1993 strange golden light humanoid appearing from the wall next to me still lying in the crib as if it was not solid and scared the living hell out of me that my mother had to take me out of the apartment because I was screaming. I'd best describe it as a zalkonian glowing alien from Star Trek Episode Transfigurations but it also reminded me so much of rynax from this anime only my seen being had no visible face. I learned there was a woman claiming to be alien abductee Chantelle Pyper that saw a similar orange light humanoid. At a similar age I also had another bizarre vision from my window which I could best describe as a tree of golden light on the hill but very symmetric. It was bright almost like the Sun even when it was bright outside but the Sun would never rise from that spot of hill, certainly not a natural shape. It wasn't a dream, I was awake and astonished by this splendor. Someday when it got dark I saw through my window a ghostly female face that gave the impression of some kind of pagan goddess, other time I saw three white human figures standing in the room and staring at me. I first reviewed Kurau Phantom Memory (originally titled Phantom Memory Kurau) just over three years ago – it seems like ancient history now. I remembered two things about Kurau from my original viewing – I LOVED it right up until the very end and I HATED the very end. So once again, I was forced to manage my expectations in order to be able to view the much-delayed release of Volume 1, without too much bias. BTW, Volume 1 was supplied by the lovely Ted. While I definitely don't love every title put out by ADV Films, I have to say that the spring of 2007 has been an especially noteworthy one for them in terms of "fantastic titles I'd never heard of before." Coyote Ragtime Show has been a fun intergalactic romp, and Utawarerumono is an intriguing mystery set in a feudalistic fantasy world. The third in this trifecta for me is Kurau Phantom Memory Vol. 1, a compelling journey into a world 100 years separated from our own. I knew virtually nothing about any one of them before they hit my doorstep. How surprising, then, for all of them to hit solid triples on their initial outings! Granted, Kurau is animated by BONES, the studio responsible for arresting titles like Wolf's Rain and Fullmetal Alchemist; maybe in the midst of all my seminary readings, I missed the buzz. It doesn't matter. Whether you've been waiting on its release for months or are reading about it here for the first time, you need to check out this show.
